Don’t let the title of this post fool you, that is NOT all I saw when I watched the video for Erykah Badu’s new single ‘Window Seat’. (If you’re one of the few people that HAVEN’T seen it yet, go to www.ErykahBadu.com and click on the Ankh. It’s exhilarating)
I’m not gonna go through all of the things people are saying about it. Just watch, and try to look beyond the nudity and all of the SURFACE things and please look to the deeper meaning of the video. The JFK references, the location, the way it was shot and the concept behind it. Also, the song is wonderful but I recommend listening to it without the video in order to appreciate it fully.
With regards to the whole GroupThink movement. Saying too much about it and this video seems to me to be perpetuating it, but I will say this: I see what Erykah’s trying to do, it’s effective, but I do think her efforts are going to inspire more GroupThink from the individuals trying to BE so individual. For example, even me liking this video, commending it and blogging about it in an effort to get others to watch it, is, could in itself be GroupThink.
However, GroupThink has also reared it’s ugly head in the form of the massive criticism the video has received. If you’re one of the people that doesn’t like or doesn’t get the video, listen to what she says at the end and think about your thoughts on the piece. Is GroupThink (in another form) leading you to judge the video before you’ve even thought about it? Nudity is not just a means to sell records or to gain attention. It’s natural, does not have to be sexual and can be an art form.
That being said, yes, my eyes were on her butt for a large portion of the video and yes, she looks great naked! LOL
P.S. Her album is out in 1 day, can’t wait!! (GroupThink THAT!)
You may have seen my post about Writer’s Block a few months back when I performed there. Well, I’m advertising it today as it’s for a good cause!
Writer’s Block is back on December 2nd for it’s final appearance of 2009. What’s great is that the lovely organisers are donating ALL of their proceeds to charity! The Boyhood to Manhood Foundation to be exact (http://www.usatfbmf.com/)

So if you want to try your hand at entertaining the crowd at Juno Bar, now’s your chance!
The Features are well known, practically legendary poets, Polarbear and shortMAN & Ade Omotayo who is a backing singer for Amy Wino!

A couple of weeks ago I walked into a dark movie theatre absolutely full to the brim with people staring intently at a cinema screen. On it was rather large girl dressed up in a ball gown, dancing as camera flashes go off around her. It was the the London Film Festival screening of Lee Daniels’ highly anticipated movie ‘Precious’ and I was missing the beginning!

I recently got the chance to interview Kwesi Boakye for YoungBlackStarz.org. Kwesi just starred in Tyler Perry‘s new movie ‘I Can Do Bad All By Myself‘ also starring Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson and the gorrrgeous Adam Rodriguez! Kwesi was really fun to talk to, and oh soo cute! Check out the interview on Young Black Starz by clicking the banner :)
Sooooo, it’s been a while huh! Sorry for the absense, I can’t say it won’t happen again, but I can apologise!
I’ve been keeping busy, In brief: Working – got a new job at MTV, I’s a Researcher now! yay! Performing – poetry is going good too, yay! Filming – IYDLIT is getting there, yay! lol!
August was totally hectic and besides doing performances, going to Lisbon and going to lots of interviews, the month was mainly about Michaela: The Birth of a Poet!
IYDLIT did her first music video for her track, ‘Coffee In The Morning’ and we filmed her album launch for ‘Fixing Barbie’ which was a FANTASTIC show! It was a great weekend and fun was had by all, not to mention all 400 tickets selling out for the show!
So here is the video for Coffee! IYDLIT did a fantastic job, don’t you agree?! Much, much, much kudos to Sadie and Precious for the fantabulous vid! Check it out, you will LOVE it! The vid AND the song! Enjoy!

Hey guys, I got a chance to help interview Yara Shahidi for Young Black Starz (.org). Yara is an amazing young actress who is the co star of the newest Eddie Murphy movie, ‘Imagine That‘. The film is about a dad’s not so great relationship with his daughter that is rekindled after she starts to give him amazing insights on his work through the magic of her security blanket, which she calls her ‘GooGaa’. The film comes out over here (UK) on the 31st July but I’ve seen it and would highly recommend it as one for the whole family to enjoy!
Yara is most definitely one of the smartest 9 year olds I’ve ever encountered. Not only is she a scene stealer in the movie, she’s also a beautiful model with a great personality and VERY ambitious. She wants to be a historian when she grows up and we chatted about the Renaissance and the Parthenon of all things! Click on the picture below and judge for yourself. Just from listening to the conversation, you can see that she’s special! This girl will no doubt go far!
As I said before, the interview was done for YoungBlackStarz.org, which is a truly phenomenal site that promotes and supports young Black talent in the US. The site also has loads of other cool features, like beauty columns and entertainment features and even a gurl talk advice series with many of the young Starz!
P.S thanks to YBS for the use of your ‘click here to listen‘ image, hehe ;)
Ciara’s new video for ‘Work’ is HOTT!! It’s the first video I’ve been able to watch the whole way thru in one sitting in a long looong time! Cici betta WORK it!
Check it out below. It was directed by amazing female director Melina, who also did a lot of Beyonce’s recent vids. You know I stay reppin and supporting the females doing their thang behind the scenes in the industry! Melina is making it big!
Ciara premiered the vid on channel 4 in the UK though. Looks like she’s following in the same footsteps as Kelly Rowland. I guess American record company execs think the UK will regard them as A list mega stars and be satisfied with them while the US is looking for something fresh….
