Interview with Yara Shahidi from ‘Imagine That’!

Hey guys, I got a chance to help interview Yara Shahidi for Young Black Starz (.org). Yara is an amazing young actress who is the co star of the newest Eddie Murphy movie, ‘Imagine That‘. The film is about a dad’s not so great relationship with his daughter that is rekindled after she starts to give him amazing insights on his work through the magic of her security blanket, which she calls her ‘GooGaa’. The film comes out over here (UK) on the 31st July but I’ve seen it and would highly recommend it as one for the whole family to enjoy!

Yara is most definitely one of the smartest 9 year olds I’ve ever encountered. Not only is she a scene stealer in the movie, she’s also a beautiful model with a great personality and VERY ambitious. She wants to be a historian when she grows up and we chatted about the Renaissance and the Parthenon of all things! Click on the picture below and judge for yourself. Just from listening to the conversation, you can see that she’s special! This girl will no doubt go far!

As I said before, the interview was done for YoungBlackStarz.org, which is a truly phenomenal site that promotes and supports young Black talent in the US. The site also has loads of other cool features, like beauty columns and entertainment features and even a gurl talk advice series with many of the young Starz!

P.S thanks to YBS for the use of your ‘click here to listen‘ image, hehe πŸ˜‰

You Betta Work!

Ciara’s new video for ‘Work’ is HOTT!! It’s the first video I’ve been able to watch the whole way thru in one sitting in a long looong time! Cici betta WORK it!

Check it out below. It was directed by amazing female director Melina, who also did a lot of Beyonce’s recent vids. You know I stay reppin and supporting the females doing their thang behind the scenes in the industry! Melina is making it big!

Ciara premiered the vid on channel 4 in the UK though. Looks like she’s following in the same footsteps as Kelly Rowland. I guess American record company execs think the UK will regard them as A list mega stars and be satisfied with them while the US is looking for something fresh….

The REAL Aunt Viv…

I don’t know about you but I always wondered why they recast the original Aunt Viv on The Fresh Prince. I know everyone remembers her at first as the beautiful Janet Hubert, and then miraculously she morphed into a ligher Daphne Maxwell Reid. I always preferred Janet. She was sassier, cuter, and just all round BETTER as aunt viv! I came across an article where Janet gets candid about the truth behind why she was fired, and also that Will Smith was actually a bit of a diva back in the day. I guess he never wanted anyone else to get the shine… She said that:

“Smith had people around him who made sure no one outshone him. I was happy to see Don Cheadle become the quality actor that he is, and often wondered how he made it past one episode, as Hilary’s boyfriend, being such a fierce actor. No one could be on ‘The Tonight Show,’ that first season, except Will. And I mean no one.”

And can you imagine, they even fired Countess Vaughn (Kim Parker) from the show cause she was too good! Talk about insecurities Will!

Check out the full article and find out how she was fired by clicking HERE

This has answered a few questions that have been knocking about in my brain for a good few years!

Oh, and Janet is also bringing out a book called ‘Perfection is not a Sitcom Mom’. Find out more at her official site!

Nail Art of the moment!

So I did my nails again and this time it’s a kind of Indian Flag inspired design so I can show some patriotism for the Indian cricket team! LOL!

For those of you who don’t know, this is what the Indian flag looks like:

India_flag

And this is what my nail design looks like:

flowernails

They’re not exactly like the flag and I can see you’re wondering how they relate at all, but the thinking behind it was that the colour scheme was green, orange and white (like our flag) and the flower designs represent the marigold flower in the middle of the flag, which in fact is our national flower! Get it? Good! LOL!

Now let me explain how I did it so you all can have a go!

I used 4 polishes: The green and the white are Barry M colours, which you can find in most Boots and Superdrug shops for about Β£2.95 a piece, which I think is really reasonable for nail polish! The Orange is a Rimmel colour, the same one I used for the orange and black flower design before. For the black dots I used a nail art brush/pen that I got from ebay. The make is ‘Mercia’ and you can find them by searching on ebay or anywhere online. They come in loads of diff colours and what’s great about them is that they have a long detail brush as well as a pen!

First, I painted my nails with a base coat and then put on the green polish just as I normally would when painting my nails with one colour. After that dried, I got the orange and white polish together to begin doing the flowers. The method for this is REALLY easy. All you need is a TOOTHPICK or some other kind of thin metal or wooden instrument. You make 5 dots with the polish, wait about 30 seconds for it to dry slightly, then with the toothpick, start at the middle of each dot and drag inwards to the centre. When you’re done with that, take the black polish and put a little dot in the middle!

This method is really hard to explain through typing but it’s ridiculously easy. Check out this youtube vid to see it explained and you’ll see what I mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoobvMBA9hI

SEE?! This girl gives really good tutorials and there are LOADS of other nail art and makeup tutorials on youtube that you can learn some amazing stuff from!

Hope you got all of that and you have a go yourselves, it really is very simple! I might do a video one of these days, that could be fun! In the meantime though, check out youtube for some fabulouso tutorials!

Peace outttt

Nail art of the moment

I think I might make a feature of this, but not how I’ve said nails of the MOMENT and not week, cause I don’t know if I can keep this up as a weekly thing, but we’ll see.

So for this nail design I used Barry M polish in bright purple for the base ( thanks to precious who gave it to me!!) I love the colour! And then For the tiger stripes I used a black polish with a thin brush, which you can get from sallys or the Internet. Obviously I used top and base coat to make it last. I just got a new top coat by OPI which is called patent leather and it makes the polish look extra shiny!! Check em out:

Pro nails

Peep the pic below to see what my nails look like right now. The orange is a Rimmel colour and I did the flowers with a nail art pen/brush that I got from sallys. I just got a great deal on a pack of 10 of them from eBay for 99p!! How amazing is that price?! Considering they cost like Β£5 each at sallys, I’d say it’s pretty great. I also got 5 marblizing tools for 95p which I can use to do dots n make patterns so my nails are gonna be lookin flyy!

Have u heard the song pro nails by kid sister? It features kanye and altho it’s about a year old, it’s still a banger. You should check it out on her myspace page. Kid sister is definitely one of my faves when it comes to current artists!

Before you go, visit jojo’s blog ‘diary of a broke single student’ (the link is to the right, to the right, you can find all ya links to the right) and check out his new banner, made by yours truly.
