There’s Nothing Like This

Over the weekend I had the privilege of performing poetry at a wedding. The groom was a gentleman I’d been working with last year and after coming to one of my performances, he had asked me to write a poem for him and his Fianceé that could be read at their wedding. The only requirements from is side was that the poem had to contain the words ‘I Love You So Many’ as that’s what they say to each other. So, off I go to write this poem, which turns out to be entirely based around the phrase. It’s pretty cheesy but just the kinda thing couples in love, LOVE!

Turns out he and his Fianceé loved it so much that they both cried when they read it and asked me to perform it for them at the ceremony. Which brings us to today…

It was a lovely wedding, the poem went down a treat and to top it all off, @NappyNubianPoet (or Carol Ohemaa for those in the real, non-twitter world) was my date, so I had great company too! For those that are interested, here’s what I wore:

It’s a little 1950’s esque number from River Island. Of course, I couldn’t disappoint on the nail front. I decided to go matching, so here we have the cherries on mint green look:

Oh, and did I mention that Omar performed at the wedding too?! Yes, THE Omar. The *sings* ‘There’s nothing like thisss’ Omar! (Hence the title of this post)

Don’t worry, we didn’t let him get away without getting photographic evidence (click ’em to see bigger)

Carol & Omar

Me & Omar

All in all, a great way to spend a Saturday & it was SO beautiful to see two people so in love and so happy, on such a special day, among their family and friends. It was wonderful to witness it and an honour to be a part of it.

Headed in the Right Direction

I often worry about where my life is going. Even though I consider myself to be someone who has always had a direction and something to strive for, I’m big on achieving goals – so I worry.

I worry about where my life will end up, how successful I’ll be, where on earth I’ll be in 5, 10, or even a years time. However, a little while ago I realised something that appeased my worrying somewhat.

I’m sure you’ve all heard that saying that goes something along the lines of

“You have to know where you’ve been to know where you’re going”.

Well, I’ve realised it’s more a case of

“You have to know where you WANT to be in order to know where you’re going”.

I’ve always equated many things in life to driving, and another way I think about this particular theory is that life direction is a bit like a Sat Nav. Yeah, I said it – a Sat Nav. Don’t worry, I’m not talking crazy, I’m going somewhere with this…

As you know, with a Sat Nav, you type in the postcode of where you want to go and the device will guide you to your destination. Knowing where you want to be or what you want to do is a bit like having a postcode for your life. It creates focus, and having focus on our goals is what helps us achieve them. This can apply to most long term (and even short term) goals.

Someone once told me (It was probably my ever-wise Mama) that you don’t always have to know HOW you’re going to get there, as long as you know where, or indeed WHAT, ‘there’ is – you’ll reach it. ‘There’, in this case, is your dream career, or your ideal weight, or knowing how to play the guitar well; anything you want to achieve really.

So basically, a postcode = knowing where you want to be.

The other thing with Sat Nav’s is that we need a building number in order to reach the exact location we want. Well, as with life, we don’t always know that building number, or the specific place we want to end up. However, a postcode gets us to the area we need to be in and although we may need to knock on a few doors, we will find the right one sooner or later.

It’s when you don’t know the building number and you’re knocking on all of those doors that knowing your postcode comes in really handy. At least you know that the one you want is among the next 10 rather than the next 1000 and if you make a wrong turn or reach a dead end, you will keep being redirected towards your destination.

If you don’t know that postcode, or at least where you want to be, you could spend all of your time knocking on the millions of doors that you THINK could be the right one, when in reality, you’re not even close. That map you’ve got isn’t any good if you don’t know where you’re going.

It may sound too good to be true, but this really is foolproof. So many books, teachings, life coaches, you name it – tell us that we should visualise what we want, focus on it and put in the work in order to be prepared for when the opportunity arises. The only catch is that, just like you have to put petrol into a car for it to go anywhere, you have to put your ENERGY into reaching your goals. As long as you put in the work, you will find yourself reaching your destinations. After all, a parked car will remain just that – parked. But a car with petrol in the tank, a running engine and a foot on the accelerator will move. Add to that a driver who knows where they want to go, then that car will be steered in the right direction until it reaches it’s destination.

I realise my mind works a bit (ok a lot) differently from the rest of the world, but this is how I see it.  Knowing all of this has really helped me, so I hope, in some lovely yet strange way that it might help you, too.

I’ve been so many places in my life and time

Heyyyyy YOU! How are ya?!

First of all, regarding the title of this post – this Donny Hathaway song (A Song For You) seems to be following me EVERYWHERE at the moment, and I mean everywhere! It’s either becoming really popular again or I’m just noticing it after hearing Whitney murder it at her concert. I swear Donny must have been rolling in his grave. Michael too, as she was singing it as a tribute to him.

I realise the whole ‘I’m back’ post is redundant here because I’m totting up so many of them it’s shameful! Let’s just get over all of the welcome back awkwardness and keep it at “hey!” shall we? Great!

So since you last heard from me, a lot has happened! A cloud of ash threatened the holidays of millions, the country got caught up in voting mania and we now have a Tory government. Big things! The biggest news around these parts though, is that I added another year to my age. I’ll admit, I forgot it was my birthday in the morning and had a positively average day. Birthdays just aren’t the same when you’re older! I did, however, have a lovely meal in the evening with my nearest and dearest which I enjoyed thoroughly (even though what we were eating was supposed to be ‘soul food’ but could have been described as anything BUT. I guess that’s what you get for having dinner at a ‘soul food’ joint in Camden rather than South Carolina… or something.)

Yah, that’s me looking pleased as punch with my cake – which wasn’t made by the restaurant and was incidentally the best part of the meal! Ooh and I got to drink about 5 cans of root beer – my all time favourite soft drink! I think I overdosed cause I felt very sick afterwards, and probably gained 3 pounds from the 165 cals in each can, but it was worth it

What else? I’ve been doing a LOT of poetry this month! May is proving to be a great month for me! OH MY GOD, I performed at RONNIE SCOTT’S! THEEEE Ronnie Scott’s Jazz bar in Soho! (If you don’t know – get to know!) That was a total ‘career’ highlight for me! Oh and Roy Ayers (yes, THE Roy Ayers) was playing downstairs at the same time!

I was nervous at first because I was the first and only spoken word artist this particular event had ever featured. Also, the audience talked shamelessly through the first artist’s set so I thought I was a goner! However, when I got on stage and started to do my thing the crowd quietened down to a pin drop silence – I couldn’t have asked for more. So all in all, a wonderful experience!

I’ve had another little ‘poetry career’ highlight this month too, (like I said, May has been good to me!) I was interviewed on Colourful Radio by the lovely Elayne Smith! I’ve gotta give all thanks to Adelaide Mackenzie from the amazing event Blessed Souls for that one, as she was kind enough to let me share the spotlight with her for the radio show. My first experience of radio went very well and I got to perform two poems live on air too! (That’s me with Elayne in the photo)

I also went to see Fantasia in concert. I’ve been a fan of hers for a while, but not to the extent that I bought all of her albums. I wouldn’t have gone if I hadn’t got a free ticket but I’m SO glad I did! It was one of the best concerts I’ve been to in a while and being right next to the stage really helped! I was near the front barriers when she requested that people come into the photography pit (which was reserved for press). Obviously the crowd went out of their minds trying to get into that metre wide gap in front of the stage. Yes, I was one of them! I was in such a prime position, I wasn’t gonna waste the opportunity! I wish I could say I swiftly jumped the barriers however I can’t. I tried and failed several times to hoist myself over them. I finally succeeded with a little help from my friends (who came to my aid after I nearly went head first over them). I’m a bit bruised and battered after the experience but it was worth it! Fantasia is a true performer and she really showed it! I got some fantastic pics too! Check out one of them on the right.

I’m just realising that not blogging for so long is very detrimental to the diary aspect of this blog because too much has gone on for me to possibly fit it all in. This post is already long enough to have you drooling with boredom onto your keyboards (if you even got this far) so I’ll wrap it up now… The following posts will be some nail art pics (which I HOPE you missed ;). There are WAY more to come but the pics are on my mums camera, which she just took with her so I can’t upload them! That can be something to look forward to I guess.

I’m gonna try to update more regularly as, aside from you knowing everything that’s going on in my life, it’s nice to be to look back and remember what I’ve been up to if I write about stuff WHEN it happens and not months later when I can’t remember much of it!

’till then my friends!

Hands 4 Haiti

When the Haiti disaster happened, I wanted to do what I could to help but what I could give myself wasn’t much, so my mum and I decided to have a little party to raise money. She invited about 30 of her friends over for an evening of Karaoke and food and I did manicures for £10 each, all proceeds going to Haiti.

It was a real hit and we raised £145 in the end! I was very pleased and the ladies loved their nails! After the jump are a few pics of some of the designs I did. It was an older crowd so they weren’t keen on going too crazy, but as you can see they all loved the rhinestones! We’ve given the money through the DEC Haiti Earthquake Appeal as it’s been recommended by the BBC and other reputable sources. It just shows that it doesn’t take much to raise a bit of money for a good cause!

Keep reading after the jump to see some of the ladies’ nail designs!

Oh, hi…

Hmm, yeah, I’ve been totally M.I.A haven’t I? Sorry about that! I’ve been working 15 hour days for the last week or so, but it’s all good because work means money and money means more nail polish and clothes!

Although I’ve been gone, I haven’t been doing nothing. For starters, I have a new banner! A new logo really, as I’m using it for my ‘Phresh Paints’ Tumblr and as a tag on all of my nail photos as I’ve found some of my pics on other sites without link backs! Above is the Phresh Paints logo – you like? I love the colours!!

So stay tuned for numerous nail art posts and a few other goodies too!

I finally found a use for Tumblr

As many of you know, I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with Tumblr as I think it’s a great place to have a blog, but I had no use for one! At least i thought I didn’t… The Polished Prude from www.polishswatches.com suggested I post all of my nail art photos there, which after a while of mulling over, I thought was a great idea! I’m going to use it as a kind of portfolio site where I can direct people if they want to see my designs.

I love the themes on Tumblr and basically the whole user experience. I think it’s really smart and it just looks so effing cool! Glad mine is finally in use. I’ve proudly named her, drumroll please…. PHRESH PAINTS! You can check me out at the following address. Make sure you bookmark me y’all!
